Getting started
Spårhunden is an app for anyone who trains tracking with their dog — everything from simple article retrieval on the lawn to competition tracks under SBK rules or IGP. The app records the track's route with GPS, keeps track of aging time, weather, and articles, and lets you follow up on every training session with clear statistics.
Spårhunden is available for iOS and Android. For the best GPS precision we recommend keeping your phone with you out in the field.
The base app is free and includes all the most important features — tracking, IGP, weather, articles, and statistics. Spårhunden Pro is an optional subscription that unlocks extras like area tracks, templates, more dogs, training goals, data export, and decoy tracks. See the Pro subscription section below.
No. Track laying and following work completely offline — the only things that need internet are the weather fetched at laying and sharing tracks between users. Map data and GPS work without a connection.
Open the side menu → "Dogs" → "+". You can add a name, an optional photo, and notes. The free version allows a limited number of dogs; Pro removes the limit.
Track laying
Track name is an optional name — leave it blank and the app sets an automatic name based on the time of day plus the date. Track type determines which discipline the track belongs to and affects which classes and settings are shown.
It's recommended. Before calibration, the start point shows where the GPS thinks you are — not always where you actually stand. You can choose "Start anyway"; the track is then marked as potentially imprecise.
GPS works without cell coverage. If the GPS signal weakens, the route can become more "jagged" — the app shows the signal quality continuously. The track doesn't stop recording; it just becomes less precise.
No, track laying runs until you tap "Done". The idea is that a track laying should reflect one continuous tracking session.
A blind track means the route is hidden from the handler — you don't see where the track is drawn on the map while you follow it. Great if you want to train "search without the answer key", or if someone else has laid the track for you.
Track following
Open the track → tap "Start track following". The app records your path separately. When you're done you tap "Finish" and get a result view with statistics, a map, and the ability to write notes.
When you finish laying the track, the aging time starts counting automatically. With Live Activity you see the countdown on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. You decide when it's time to head out and follow.
Automatically: when you walk close to an article (10 m by default) and stop for a few seconds. You can adjust this in Settings → Track following. Manually: tap the article flag on the map.
No, it's optional. You can add a photo, notes, and a rating per article after the track.
Track types
| Type | Use |
|---|---|
| Working tracking | Classic SBK tracking training — appell, lower, higher, elite classes |
| IGP | IPO/IGP-FH with a foreign tracklayer and longer aging time |
| Decoy | Distraction track — Pro feature |
No, class is optional. If you set one, you automatically get reference values for length, articles, and aging time. They're only suggestions.
Settings → "Disciplines" → toggle on the disciplines you train.
A distraction track that crosses a "real" track to train the dog to stay on its original track. Archived after 48 hours. Pro feature.
Articles
As many as you want. They're numbered automatically 1, 2, 3 in the order you place them.
Yes. Tap the article flag → "Delete". The remaining articles are renumbered automatically.
The article counts as not found. You can change the status manually in the result view.
Pro subscription
Monthly or yearly. Current prices are shown in the app under Settings → Spårhunden Pro. The yearly plan is about 50% cheaper.
Via the App Store: Settings → "Manage subscription". You keep the Pro features until the period runs out.
Yes. Settings → "Restore purchases". The purchase is tied to your Apple ID.
All data remains. The Pro features lock but no data is lost.
Sharing
Open the track → tap the share icon → choose "Visible track" or "Blind track" → choose a validity period (1–30 days) → share the link. The recipient opens it in Spårhunden and imports.
No, the free version is enough.
Yes. The track content is encrypted locally on your device before upload. The key exists only in the link — we can never read the content. The data is deleted at the expiry date.
Yes. Open the track → the share menu → "Revoke". The link stops working immediately.
The recipient only sees the article locations — not the route. Perfect for letting someone train without "spoiling" where the track goes.
Apple Health
If you enable "Save tracks to Apple Health", each completed track is saved as a walking workout with time, distance, and GPS route.
No. Spårhunden only writes workouts — we don't read any data from Apple Health.
Yes. We link each track to its workout via an internal reference — when you delete, we remove both.
In the app via Settings → the Apple Health toggle, or iOS Settings → Health → Data Access → Spårhunden.
iCloud
Yes, automatically — if you're signed in with the same Apple ID and have iCloud Drive enabled for Spårhunden.
Locally on the device and in your private iCloud account. No servers of ours store your tracks. Exception: shared tracks on our encrypted sharing back-end until the expiry date.
Yes, all functionality except sync works without iCloud.
Pro feature. Settings → "Export data" → "Export to iCloud Drive".
Statistics & goals
Overview per period (week, month, custom), filterable by dog and terrain. Shows number of tracks, distance, found rate, weather distribution, and trend.
Pro feature. Settings → "Weekly goals & challenges". Set goals for number of tracks or distance. When a goal is met you get a notification and animation.
Gamification — you unlock badges when you reach milestones (e.g. first working track, 10 tracks in a month). Found in the side menu → "Badges".
Area tracks
Pro feature. Anonymous tracks from other users within 20 km and the last 24 hours — faint lines on the map.
Yes, if you have Pro. It's mutual — you see others', they see yours. Only the geographic route is shared.
Settings → "Area tracks". Choose whether they're shown during laying, following, and/or in the result view.
Troubleshooting
Adjust Settings → Track following: increase the distance if the dog marks a bit to the side, lower the dwell time if the dog rushes onward quickly. You can always mark manually.
It must be on in iOS Settings → Spårhunden → Live Activities, and in Spårhunden's own Settings → General → "Live Activity during aging time".
Change it via iOS Settings → Spårhunden → Language.
Uninstall the app — all local data is deleted. iCloud data is cleared via Settings → your name → iCloud → Spårhunden → Delete data.
Privacy
Nothing other than saving tracks and dogs locally and via iCloud. No ads, no third-party analytics. Read the full privacy policy.
Otherwise — never.
Yes. End-to-end encrypted. We only see encrypted data with no ability to read it.
